Earl Phillips Brooks, 83, founder of the Harobr Isles Tennis Club, died May 12, 1998, in Klamath Falls.

Mr. Books was born July 29, 1914 in Merlin, Michigan to Amos and Mildred Brooks. In 1918 the family moved to Portland, where he graduated from Franklin High School.

In 1934 he moved to Klamath Falls, where he worked for the Ewuana Box Co. until he enlisted in the Navy in 1942.

Upon returning home he worked at various accounting jobs. During this time he met and married Gertrude Hanson in 1948. The couple recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.

He then worked as an office manager for East Side Electric until he retired in 1978. Mr. Books also prepared tax returns and did accounting for several busineses.

Mr. Brooks was actively involved in Basin sports. In his early years, he played on a semi-pro baseball team and later coached numerous youth baseball teams. He was also a well-known tennis player and won 17 striaght men's single A titles. At one time he was ranked as high as No. 3 in the United States. He became nationally ranked in both singles and doubles.

Mr. Brooks was also recently honored as the founder of the Harbor Isles Tennis Club.

Survivors include his wife, Gertie; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Kieth Colahan of Klamath Falls; son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Jodi Brooks of Portland; grandchildren, Brad and Trevor Brooks of Portland; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Sherman and Gerry Hanson of Klamath Falls.
