Atmar M. Pelham was born November 7, 1912 to the parents of John Mathias Pelham and Emma Caskey. He was the youngest child of this large family.

He grew up in the small town of Grapeland Texas, where he spent most of his life. He was a veteran of WWII where he served as a detention guard, guarding German prisoners.

Atmar met and married Margaret Benton Vickery while living in Grapeland Texas, but the marriage was not meant to last. Together the two had one son, Larry Wayne Pelham. After their divorce Larry stayed in the care of his father, rare for that time period. Atmar said that he had married the love of his life and never married again. He never entertained the thought of having another relationship, in his mind he was always a married man.

Atmar made his home in Grapeland and he worked as an electrician and a general fix it man for many years. He opened up a small service station in downtown Grapeland where he taught his son how to work on cars and his grandchildren played on many occasions.

Atmar became a grandfather to two children: Lillene Eleanor Broughton/Pelham and Larry Wayne Pelham Jr.. He was loved by so many and his grandchildren thought the world of him. In his elder years he lived in the home of his son and daughter-in-law (Lillie Eleanor Barr/West) all to the great enjoyment of his grandchildren. All was safe within his arms.

When his health deteriorated Atmar was moved to the nursing home in Palestine Texas where he spent his last days. Atmar went to be with the Lord on Feb 10, 1993. He was buried in Parker Cemetery next to his parents and siblings. His death was mourned by so very many, but his grandchildren felt the loss more than anyone.

Rest in Peace Papaw.
