GREENVILLE - Arthur Hampton Painter, 81, of Route 2, Box 761, died Saturday morning (Nov. 26, 1994) at his home.

Mr. Painter was born Aug. 4, 1913, in Augusta County, a son of the late Jackson and Virginia Gertrude Martin Painter.

He served with the U.S. 3rd Army in Europe during World War II, where he was wounded twice, receiving the Purple Heart medal.

He worked for the Virginia Department of Highways from 1946 until his retirement in 1975.

Mr. Painter was a member of Pines Chapel Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Lucille P. Staton of Greenville; two grandchildren, Steven Cecil Staton and A. Renee Staton, both of Staunton; and a sister, Viola Fitzgerald Kelly of Greenville.

His wife, Anna Belle Doyle Painter, died Nov. 26, 1991.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Pines Chapel Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Robert S. Goshorn. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Kenneth Conner, Ernest Fitzgerald, Lloyd Fitzgerald, Charles Fitzgerald, Donald Fitzgerald, Ricky Doyle, Bobby Cash and Ervin Thompson.

The family received friend at Hamrick Funeral Home Sunday and will receive at other times at the residence.
