PEKIN - Erven George Abel, 91, of 911 Audubon Drive passed away at 6:55 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at Amy's Country Manor in Pekin.

Born July 3, 1918, in Pekin to George and Elizabeth (Graber) Abel, he married Dorothy Weghorst on Jan. 26, 1946. She died Feb. 18, 1952. He later married Eleanor Kathryn Graber on April 18, 1953, in Pekin. She died Aug. 10, 2001, in Morton.

He also was preceded in death by one sister.

Surviving are one son, John P. (Judy) Abel of Pekin; one grandson, Shane C. Abel of Pekin; two stepgrandchildren, Troy (Kim) Bledsoe and Debra Woods, both of Pekin; three great-grandchildren, Olivia Abel, Robert Abel and Kayla Abel; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

A 1937 graduate of Pekin Community High School, Erv was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the European Theater and attaining the rank of corporal.

He worked for Caterpillar Inc. and then for American Distilling Company in Pekin for many years as a government clerk, retiring in 1978. Following retirement, Erv worked part-time at Hank's Hardware in Pekin.

Erv was a 50-year member of Pekin Elks Lodge 1271, where he was past exalted ruler, past trustee and secretary of the lodge for more than 20 years. He also was a past district deputy grand exalter ruler.

He was a member of Roy L. King Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1232 in Pekin and Pekin Moose Family Center 916.

In 1989, Erv and Eleanor were honored as the first couple selected to be Grand Marshals of the Pekin Marigold Festival.

Erv was a lifelong member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pekin and was a member of the Churchmen's Brotherhood. He was a former board member at the church and served as a longtime ticket co-chair for the annual pancake and sausage breakfast held at the church.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pekin. The Rev. Todd K. Mushaney will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin, with an Elks memorial service held at 7 p.m. Further visitation will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin, with military rites accorded by the United States Army and the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team.
