ROCK HILL - Mr. Sylvester Young (S. Y.) Jackson, 95, of 421 Annafrel St. Rock Hill, died Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at his home.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, June 12, 2010 at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel with Pastor Kevin Cooley officiating. The Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park, Cherry Rd. The family will receive friends, from 12:00 until 1:45 PM Saturday at the funeral home.
A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Jackson was the son of the late Press Fred Jackson and Texie Hannah Russell Jackson, he was a well known home builder in the Rock Hill area for many years. After a tour of duty in the US Navy during WWII he returned home as a proud veteran and member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was employed by several large construction firms, building plants such as the Celanese and the Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company (Bleachery), the Atomic Energy And Research Plant in Aiken SC, and his beloved Bowater Paper Mill in Catawba, from which he retired. Mr. Jackson was a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church in Fort Mill, SC.
Surviving include his wife, Lula Rowell Jackson; sons, Hazel Y. Jackson and wife Sammie, Kenneth Jackson, William Jackson, Albert D. Jackson and his wife Ann, Melvin Jackson, Richard Jackson; daughters, Milford Baker, Loraine Cochran, Rosey Demby, Brenda Morris;Stepsons, Tommy Harrelson and wife Bonnie, Jack Lane and wife Sandy, and their families; 22 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and 14 great great grandchildren.
Mr. Jackson was also preceded in death by his daughter Melvine Cox; step daughters, Ann Brandon and Marie Walker.
The family would also like to recognize caregiver, Linda Williams for her dedicated service and care through Mr. Jackson's time of illness.
