John S. Curtis, 97, of rural Oakland died at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 29, 1975 in Charleston Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Taber Funeral Home, Oakland. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.
Mr. Curtis was born near Oakland, son of Charles E. and Margaret Curtis. He married Stella Henderson in 1899. She died in 1901. He married Essie Hallock in 1906. She died in 1958.
Surviving are five sons, Leon of Seattle, Wash., Ermal, Lester and Emmert, all of Oakland, and Kermit of Bedford, Ind.; two daughters, Mrs. Chase (Willmetta) Temples of Oakland and Mrs. Leonard (Lenora) Gardner of Clear Water, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Twelve brothers and sisters preceded him in death.
Mr. Curtis was a retired farmer and carpenter. He attended the Fairview Methodist Church near Oakland.
In the late 1800's Mr. Curtis farmed and raised cattle in North Dakota and Kansas, in 1910 he homesteaded land in Wyoming, and in 1914 moved back to East Oakland Township.
