She [KATHARINE] died in Grand Rapids after living the last of her life with Johanna Hyland Schmidt and her children. My father, Val Schmidt, remembers her as not knowing much English so he would play tricks on her by getting his youngest brother, Cyril, to swear at her in English and she would pat his head and say "Schoene Kerl" which translates as "pretty rascal". ~~Tom Schmidt, December 2002.
