Okay D. Highsmith went home to be with his lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Oct. 6. 2007.

He was born in Brantley County on Dec. 27, 1912 to Rufus and Winnie Johns Highsmith, but had lived in Glynn County most of his life.
He had been married to the former Eula Mae Knight for 65 years.

He proudly served his county in the U.S. Army during World War II as a member of the 10th Armored Division.
After his discharge from the Army, he worked as a barber at Landers Barber Shop on Norwich Street for 40 years, until it closed in 1986.

He accepted Christ as his personal Savior in March of 1931, and joined the First Wesleyan Church of Brunswick. He was a faithful member of the church for 72 years, during which time he served in various leadership positions.

He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Linda J. Highsmith of Brunswick; brother-in-law Willis E. Knight (Gladys); and several nieces and nephews. Survivors also include special friends, Rev. W. C. Wright, Eddie and Betty (Lee) Webster, Pierce and Benny (Lee) Long, Patricia (Lee) McClanahan and Billy and Carolyn Lee.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007 at the Edo Miler and Sons Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007, at the First Wesleyan Church of Brunswick with the Rev. Phil Harrington officiating.
Interment with military honors will follow in Palmetto Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Raymond House, Ben Whittle, Keith Knight and Lowell Ansley.

The family requests contributions be made to the First Wesleyan Church, 2307 Ellis St., Brunswick, GA 31520 or Hephizibah Children's Home, 6601 Zebulon Road, Macon, GA 31220, or a ministry of the donor's choice.

Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
