In spite of what is on the stone, Sanford's obituary states he died in 1919. That obituary was also published in 1919.

Mr. Sanford Meredith FLING died suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sadie LICKEY, in Washington, March 27, 1919, aged 80 years. Survived by another daughter, Mrs. Zula GRAY, and a half-sister, Mrs. Marcellus MAFFETT, and a half-brother, Mr. Benjamin FLING, both of this county. His wife, who was Miss Sallie Ann TRACY, died many years ago. Interment on Sunday in Hillsboro.
