The son of Edward Vale Allen and Frances Randall, "Elmore" married Mrs. Mary Jane (nee Beason) Wilson on 14 Apr 1864 in Calhoun County, Illinois. She was the mother of 1 child from her first marriage to William Jasper Wilson. He died in 1862 while serving in the Civil War.

Elmore and Mary Jane were the parents of 7 children. However, 3 died in infancy or early childhood.

He was an educator for many years. He was the Superintendent of Schools in Calhoun County for a time.

Mary Jane died in 1901.
