One of at least five children born to Anna Rose Klescewski and Benjamin V Chitko. He appears with his parents and siblings in the 1940 Federal Census of Armstrong Creek, Forest County, Wisconsin. The household included: Benjamin Chitko, age 30, born in Illinois, a laborer for the WPA; Anne, age 26, born in Wisconsin to parents born in Poland, married at age 17, five children; Rosemary, age 9, born in Wisconsin; Alaine, age 8, born in Wisconsin; Benjamin, age 7, born in Wisconsin; Stella, age 5, born in Wisconsin; and Evelyn, age 4, born in Wisconsin.

He married in Key West, Florida in June 1958.

He enlisted in the Marines when he was seventeen and fought in the Korean War and subsequently in Vietnam with 1st Battalion, 4th Marines. He was promoted from staff sergeant to gunnery sergeant while in Vietnam. He was killed in Vietnam by hostile fire and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for valor.
