My Great Great Grandmother

No evidence has been found as to whether Cassie was married, a single mother or married to someone also named Hicks at the time of her children's birth. Identity of children's father has not been determined. 1910 Census indicates Cassie HICKS, age 72, is a widow and had 5 five children, 2 still living. Can only account for three children to date - sons Marion and William and daughter Elletha Frances. It is possible there were some stillborn children or that some died at less than ten years of age between the census periods.

1860 U S Census - Morganton, Fannin County, GA (Age 21) "Cassa" living with David Hicks (78) a Botanic Doctor and Elizabeth Hicks (50), as well as Susan, Harriett and David Hicks, Jr.

1870 U S Census - Morganton, Fannin County, GA (Age 28) "Cassia" living with sons Marion (my great grandfather) and William plus daughter Elletha Frances. Living next door is an Elizabeth Hicks (Age 57), Lucinda (25), and David (10). Is this her mother or mother-in-law?

1880 U S Census - Fair Play, Fannin County, GA (Age 42), with sons Marion and William and daughter Frances. Next door is an "Amos Owenby" (68) and wife Mary (70). Signifigance of this is in the 1900 Census, see below.

1900 U S Census - Ivy Log, Union County, GA (Age 63) living with son William B. Hicks under name Cassie "Owenby", a widow. The 1890 US Census was destroyed by fire. Many things happened during the twenty years that elapsed between these censuses. One of the occurrences could have been Cassie's marriage to Amos Owenby, if he became a widower, or some member of the Owenby family mentioned above, and his subsequent death.

1910 U S Census - Ivy Log, Union County, GA (Age 72), Cassie "Hicks", widow. Living with Daughter-in-Law Leonora Hicks, widow of Cassie's son William.

1920 U S Census - Cassie not found on 1920 Census, presumed to have died since 1910.
