Son of Joseph T & Jane Graham Painter, he married Sarah Angeline EVANS (1850-1924) on Dec. 25, 1867 in Owen County, Indiana. Charles T. Painter served three years in the Civil War in the 118th Illinois Infantry Company G. Charles was a second lieutenant of his company and in 1863 was made first lieutenant. During the Civil War he was in the following engagements: Chickasa Bluffs; Arkansas Post; Port Gibson; Champion Hills; Black River; siege at Vicksburg from its beginning to its close; Jackson, Miss.; Brookhaven; Carioncrow Bayou; Grand Cotton, near Iberia; Grose Bayou, which was a hand to hand fight; Plains Store, La.; and Liberty, Miss. He escaped without a single wound. Charles was mustered out at Port Hudson (Baton Rouge), La. on October 1, 1865. He was one of 27 who returned home out of 98.

Charles migrated with his father, Joseph T. Painter and his stepmother, Phoebe, in 1836. The family located three miles north of LaHarpe, Illinois. Charles was educated in Hancock Co. schools and helped his father farm until he was 19 years old. In 1850, he bought 160 acres of wild prairie land in Terre Haute Twp., Henderson Co., Illinois. Later he added eighty acres, then forty, then another forty. By the time he died he had accumulated 800 acres of land.

1849, Charles T. Painter made a trip to California to seek gold. The party with which he travelled crossed the river at Omaha and journeying with ox teams reached their destination after travelling six months, locating near Orville, California. There he engaged in prospecting and mining for three years with fair success and returned home by way of the water route." (History of Hancock, McDonough, and Henderson Counties)

When Charles returned to Illinois from California n 1850, he bought 160 acres of wild prairie land in Terre Haute Twp., Henderson Co., Illinois. Later he added eighty acres, then forty, then another forty. By the time he died he had accumulated 800 acres of land He married Angeline Evans on Dec.25,1867 in Owen County, IN.
