Obituary - The township of Terre Haute lost a highly respected citizen when Charles Carroll Painter passed away Friday, Jan. 12, 1945. He was born on the Painter homestead two miles northeast of Terre Haute on Jan. 1, 1881, being the fourth son of Charles T. & Sarah Angeline (Evans) Painter. He received his education at North School and later attended Gem City Business College in Quincy. He was engaged in farming with his mother and brother Ralph after the passing of his father and continued on this same farm until 1939. He was united in marriage to Mary Birdine Bryan of Terre Haute, Ill. on Feb. 24, 1903. To this union were born seven children: John Justice, Lowell, Fred Arnold, Sarah Angeline Kern (of Peoria), Arthur Leroy, Mary Birdine Pogue (of Urbana), and Carol Bernice Elston of Terre Haute, IL. He was a member of the Methodist Church of Terre Hauteand served it faithfully. He served his community as a school director for 33 consecutive years and as a Farm Bureau director for many years, being always mindful of the public interests. He is survived by two brothers, Eugene of Terre Haute and Ralph of Monmouth, a sister-in-law Mrs. Clara Painter of Stronghurst, a step sister, Jeanette Painter of Clarinda, Iowa; fifteen grand children, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and a host of friends who mourn his passing on to a home of rest and peace. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Frank and a sister Eva...funeral services were held at the Terre Haute Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon. Following the service the remains were laid to rest in the Terre Haute Cemetery. Pallbearers were A.W. Kemp, Silas Apt, Jesse Elston, C.E. Painter, Clifford Ingram, and Virgil Morgan.
