Gene, also known as Dudley, was born in Chillicothe, Ohio, son of Rosco and Myra Ginther DeLong. He had two sisters: Verne Rose and Roberta Ann.

His mother later married Mr.Gillogly.

Gene was a member of the Merchant Marine and served on the SS STANVAC CALCUTTER, an oil tanker, on a voyage between Montevideo, Uruguay, and Port of Spain, Trinidad. His ship was torpedoed 500 miles off the coast of Brazil on the morning of June 6th, 1942 by RAIDER No. 23, [known in the German navy as "SCHIFF 23" and to her British enemies as "RAIDER 23" and originally the 4,418-ton merchant ship the S.S. Cairo.]

Each gun on the Calcutta fired more than twenty rounds before the ship was sunk. The German Raider 23 opened fire with all guns and fired 153 rounds and one torpedo at the Stanvac Calcutta before the ship went down with her flag still flying. She had fought back against hopeless odds and in the best tradition of the United States Navy and she was awarded the Gallant Ship Citation.

Gene and the other wounded survivors, were transported by the German ship, Charlotte Schliemann to Camp Osaka, Japan. He was released after the war ended. Gene endured almost four years of brutal prisoner of war captivity by the Japanese.

He married Ruby Bedford July 15, 1946 and had 3 children: Linda, Robert and Brian.

He was a good man and did what he could with his wife to raise his three children as responsible citizens.
