Eldest son of Jesse Leavithe and Elizabeth Andrews Garrett, Wesley's middle initial was unknown before finding a deed where his father sold him about 50 acres in Montgomery County, Kentucky, dated January 29, 1850. His middle initial may have stood for either "Andrews" or "Andrew", but that is just a guess. Wesley was born in Madison County, Alabama as was his next brother, Richard Masley Garrett. Jesse and Elizabeth's marriage took place in that county in January, 1827. Before the third child was born to Jesse and Elizabeth, they had moved to Montgomery County, Kentucky where they remained. Wesley was a shoemaker as was his father and three of his brothers: Richard Masley Garrett, Henry Thompson Garrett and Green Berry Garrett. Wesley was married twice, first to Amanda Welch (died not too long after childbirth in 1860) and then to Amanda's sister, Lucy. These women were daughters of William and Cynthia Collins Welch. Wesley practiced his shoemaking trade at least through the age of 76, as there was an advertisement for his shoe and saddle repair business in the Clay City Times in 1904. Wesley and Amanda had five children: Richard "Worth" (1852-1943), Julia F. (1853-1930) who married William P. Mansfield, Nancy Caroline (abt 1855-abt 1930) who married Ancil D. Wasson, George H. (1857-1884) who was born in Texas while the family was considering a move to that state, and Mary Elizabeth (1859-1924) who married Richard McKinney. Lucy and Wesley had no children together. Wesley lived to be 102 years and ten months of age and outlived three of his five children. His 102nd birthday was the occasion for a front page write up in the local newspaper in early 1930. He was the county's oldest living citizen at the time.
