Pioneer Resident of County Passes Away
John Bestman, Well-Known and Highly Respected, Died at St. Clair.
John Bestman, one of the early pioneers of this county, died at his home at St. Clair Saturday evening at six o'clock. He had been a sufferer for the past two years. Mr. Bestman was born in Holstein, Germany, July 20, 1842, and was one of three survivors of a family of seven children. He came to this country in 1865 and to Mankato in 1865. Previous to his coming to this country he had learned the blacksmith trade. He followed this trade for a period of four years in Mankato, and at St. Clair for twn years. Following this he engaged in farming on a farm south of St. Clair. In 1869 he was married to Henrietta Byersdorf.
Mr. Bestman was active in the public affairs of his community and during his lifetime held many offices of trust and responsibility. At the time of his death he was a member of the McPherson Farmers Insurance company, and was one time a director of the St. Clair bank. Mr. Bestmaln became a member of the I.O.O.F. of Mankato thirty-five years ago, and was an active member at the time of his death.
The deceased is survived by his wife and three sons and one daughter, Charles H. Bestman of St. Paul, John H Bestman of St. Clair, Herbert F Bestman of New Richland, and Miss Helena A Bestman of St. Clair.
The funeral service will be held at the family home in St. Clair Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. T. Ross Paden of Mankato conducting the services. The remains will be laid to rest in St. Johns cemetery south of St. Clair.
