Born in McPherson, Kan., in 1949, Ronald (Ronnie) Johnson grew up a rancher's son and attended high school in Platte City, Mo. He was an extraordinary athlete, scoring a school record of 52 points in one basketball game, and as a quarterback his team lost only three games in four years. Mr. Johnson also was class president and a talented musician, playing nearly all horn instruments and everything Beethoven ever wrote on the piano.

In 1966, Mr. Johnson accepted a football scholarship at Wichita State University where he worked toward a degree in child psychology. Tragically, he was among those that died in the 1970 plane crash that took the lives of many WSU players, athletic staff and friends of the team. Following the crash, the Ronald G. Johnson Football '70 Scholarship was established as a small way of continuing the spirit of a talented and warm individual that offered so much to those he knew. "He was a good human being, a good person to everyone," said the young woman he was engaged to marry. In memory of their son, his parents, Howard and Virginia, wrote the play, Waltzing in Heaven. The production features the incredible story of the recovery of Mr. Johnson's ring 13 years after the crash and The Ivory Key Overture, a piece written prior to his passing.
