Julia Bates Nichols was the daughter of Silas Wright Bates (birth name Silas Wright Storey) and Mary Daugherty Bates. She was the wife of George Hamilton (Henry Westberry) Nicholas/ Nichols. She was the mother of Anne Nichols (famous playwright and author of "Abie's Irish Rose"); Evelyn Nichols (actress who played "Rosemary" from "Abie's Irish Rose" on the stage) and Elsie (actress who also played "Rosemary" from "Abie's Irish Rose" on Broadway).
Anne Nichols once described her mother in the following way:
"My mother was a Philadelphian; a sweet, gentle little creature who adored her husband and asked nothing more in life than to be his wife." It appears that Julia was Julia A. Bates (see Dictionary of Literary Biography on Anne Nichols at www.bookrags.com) daughter of Silas and Mary Bates from Philadelphia (her father was adopted by William D. Bates according to the 1880 Hammonton, Atlantic, New Jersey census that lists him as an "Adoptive son." Mary Bates appears to be Mary Daugherty. According to a passport application dated June 17,1924 Julia was born in Philadelphia PA and lived at 618 East Thompson Street. She had divorced her husband circa 1920 and her husband was living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at that time.They were divorced in Cook County, Chicago. Julia stated that they were married in 1887. She is described on the passport as being 5 foot 3 inches tall with blue eyes. In the 1910 census the last name is spelled "Nickels" and it states that Julia had been married 21 years and had eight children. Only three children were living at the time of the census.
Evelyn Nichol's daughter states that this is the picture of her mother that she kept in her home for many years.
Obituary: Mrs. Julia Anne Nichols, mother of Anne Nichols, the author, died here tonight at the home of another daughter, Mrs. E.E. Clifford (Elsie Nichols). She had been ill for several weeks. Mrs. Nichols was born in Philadelphia sixty years ago and came to Southern California in 1927.
Died from a heart attack in Elsie's home.
