Born to Elliot and Mabel Knobloch Harris, he grew up in Sodus Point where his parents ran The Harris House. Don was a talented athlete, playing soccer, basketball, and baseball for Sodus High. He played semi-pro baseball at age fifteen. He was an outstanding pitcher in the Border League, playing for Watertown and Auburn. He also played for the Sodus Point Chiefs and in the Old Timer League in Rochester. In later years he loved playing golf at Sodus Bay Heights Golf Club and The Monastery Golf Club in Orange City, FL where he made his winter home.
Don retired as a tool and die maker from New Process Gear where he worked thirty-eight years. He and his brother-in-law, Jim Topping, were co-owners of Tops Grocery in Wolcott.
Don married his grade-school sweetheart, Elizabeth (Betty) Topping, in 1942. She died in 1985.
