In an account of his childhood, " Highlights and Memories" Burleigh speaks of his playmate Grace Mitchell, his father being passenger conductor on the Burlington Railroad, the phone calls from his father when he arrived home after making a passenger run, the night their home burned to the ground, being carried to a neighbors home to watch as his own home burned,. In the year 1904, his parents, brother Earl and himself traveled by covered wagon, from McCook, Nebraska with two teams of horses, two cows and two crates of chickens-one on each side of the wagon, traveling along the Republican River, traversing through the towns of Indianola, Bartley, Cambridge, Holbrook, Arapahoe, Edison, Oxford, Orleans, and Alma, Nebraska, averaging about eight to ten miles per day. He speaks of especially remembering the stop in Cambridge, when early in the morning he accompanied his father to a grist mill to obtain flour and was awe struck by what seemed to be an enormous dam across the river.

His highlights and memories of South Bend, Indiana, In the year 1923, he witnessed the largest parade ever held by the K.K.Klan in South Bend., it was headed by a Mr. Stephenson, who at that time was a powerful political figure in the United States, the gathering resulted in violence and mobs,, in which several people lost their lives and resulted in enormous property damage. He also witnessed the Italian Air Squadron under a Captain Balboa which was considered Benito Mussolini's finest when this flotilla flew from Rome, Italy to help dedicate the opening of the century of Progress Exposition in Chicago, Ill., He also witnessed the flight of the German Zeppelin Von Hindenberg on its flight around the world as it passed over the Northern part of Indiana. He speaks of his wife Alieva Esta " Allie " Runnels Redifer dying and leaving six children motherless and the saddness of it, about the schools they attended, Perley School, South Bend, Burleigh Jr, Lorraine, Manford, Muesell School, and German School, South Bend, all six of the children attended, and they all finished the eighth grade at German Township school. All graduated from central high School except Jacquelyn who completed two years there and graduated from Whites School at Wabash, Indiana. I feel I can not do justice to the exciting and interesting life Burleigh led in the short space I have allotted here, I do have twelve pages of accounts of his very interesting and exciting life.
