The cabin he built for his family was deemed an historic landmark by the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission who obtained a grant to restore it. The James Matten Early Cabin was built between 1796 and 1798 of rough – hewn logs by James Matten Early and was completely restored by Historic Fincastle, Inc. Today it serves as the Fincastle Museum and is furnished with period antiques from Fincastle and Botetourt County. Colonial style gardens are maintained by the Roanoke Valley Herb Society."
His bride was Miss Jane Gatewood, whom he married in her hometown of Albemarle County, Virginia in 1780.
Their children were Mary "Polly" Early Yost of Fancy Farm, IL-James Matten Early Jr- John Early and Jane Early.
