William E. "Bill" Blankenship, 79, of Black Mountain, passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 14, 2003, at Mission St. Joseph's Health System.

Mr. Blankenship was a lifetime resident of Buncombe County and the son of the late Robert Hugh and Julia Eleanora Smith Blankenship. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during World War II. He was a member of VFW Post 891. He was retired from Railway Express Service and a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks.

Mr. Blankenship was preceded in death by his wife, the former Irene Della Burnette and a grandson.

He is survived by three daughters, Elinor Harrelson of Muskogee, Okla., Anne Clark of Knoxville, Tenn., and Sue McPeters of Muskogee, Okla.; two brothers, Hugh Blankenship of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho, and George Blankenship of Enka; and four grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Faith at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Enka. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Chris Bradford will officiate.

The Buncombe County Veterans Memorial Team will conduct military graveside honors.

Forest Lawn Funeral Home is serving the Blankenship family.
