The son of Peter & Elizabeth (Plank) Rice, in 1860, he was a blacksmith presumably living in Menallen Township, Adams County. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg August 7, 1862, and mustered into federal service there August 22 as a private with Co. C, 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry (160th Pa). Transferred to Co. F and promoted to farrier, date unknown, and honorably discharged with his company June 21, 1865.
He married Mary C. Royer and fathered Benjamin Elmer, Emma E., Seth Edwin, and Robert E. (b. 05/22/85). He died when struck by a train allegedly during an episode of sleepwalking.
The children and their births were Benjamin Elmer (08/10/67), Emma Eve (b. 11/26/70), Seth Edwin (b. 04/09/74), and Robert Earl (b. 05/22/85). I found that on Ancestry.com.
