James came as a boy from Putnam County, Indiana to Davis County, Iowa with his parents in 1839. He married Martha M. Matlick on Feb. 2, 1864 in Troy, Davis County, Iowa. They soon removed to Siskiyou County, California where most of James' family had already gone. James and Martha had two sons, Amos and Frank, while they were in California. Two more children were born there, daughters Aggie and Etta. When they were grown Amos and Frank returned to Siskiyou County. Frank settled there and Amos eventually in Lassen County, California.
