Prentice Olan Pilgreen, 70, of Dayton, was born in Hillister, Texas, on June 18, 1940 to the late Lorane (Goodman) and Oscar Travis Pilgreen. He died early Saturday, June 19, 2010, in his home, with his loving family by his side.

On April 12, 1962, Prentice married the love of his life, Elizabeth Nugent. Together they reared two daughters and a son. He was a family man who put his wife and children first. In June of 1957 Prentice entered the Navy, where he proudly served our country. He always had a fascination with the water so the Navy seemed a natural choice. Before retiring, Prentice was a drilling superintendant with Mobil Oil, and then worked as a consultant. He was a member of Daisetta Baptist Church and an active Mason with Dayton Lodge #825. Solid as a rock, the true patriarch of the family, Prentice was a hard worker with a dry sense of humor who loved teaching and mentoring people. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, casinos, and traveling where they could enjoy the open road and see new places. He was a man of strong moral character. He also liked building things in his shop and working in his yard; a man who always had to be doing something. He loved to read Louis Lamour, most of all he loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; he lit up when they were near. He led with a stern voice and very loving heart; the perfect balance.

Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Bobby, Harold and A. F. Pilgreen.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 48 1/2 years, Elizabeth Pilgreen of Dayton; daughters, Sherry Pilgreen of Dayton and Cindy Rhoden and husband, Kirby of Batson; son, Prentice Wayne Pilgreen and wife, Kelly of Cat Spring; 8 grandchildren, Kerri Bartee and husband, John, Paula Ryel and husband, Erik, Amanda Wright, Chloe Nichole Day, Jeffery Parker, Brandy Faneros and husband, Bobby, Crystal St James and husband, Christopher and Sharee Pilgreen; 13 great-grandchildren, John Michael and Cade Bartee, Lexi, Caitlyn and Taelor Ryel, Tyler Wright, Kaylee Parker, Trae and Kylee Faneros, Edwin and Griffen St James, and Bryce Mack.

Visitation with family and friends will be 12:00p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, June 21, 2010 at Sterling Funeral Home. Services will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at Sterling Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Herman Moor officiating. Burial will follow at Palms Memorial Park with Dayton Masonic Lodge #825 doing last rites and the VFW Post No. 5621 providing full military honors.
