Medical, Civic Leader Dies at 77

Dr. Charles N. Atkins, active in medical and civic affairs since the 1950s and husband of secretary of state Hannah Atkins died Wednesday in Oklahoma City. He was 77.

Atkins was born in Triaidad, West Indies, on October 11, 1911. He received his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., in 1950.

He was a member of the county, state and American medical associations, chairman of the Department of Family Practice at Baptist Medical Center and clinical professor of family practice at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center.

Atkins served as a delegate to the 1965 White House Conference on Aging and was a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physician.

He also was a member and past officer of numerous medical and civic organizations, including the Heart Association, Urban League and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Funeral services will be at 11 am Friday at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral with burial in Trice Hill Cemetery, directed by McKay-Davis Funeral Home.
