Rufus was the son of Arthur Crocker and his wife, Lucinda Bagwell.

Rufus joined the Confederates States Army.
LIEUTENANT, COMPANY I, 13th REGIMENT SOUTH CAROLINA INFANTRY
1861 Sept 3- Enlisted at Spartanburg, 23 years old
1862 Aug 29 - Wounded at the Battle of Manassas; fractured his left fibula. Rufus laid in the woods injured until Sept. 5.
1862 Sept 5 - Headed to a hospital in Warrenton, Virginia
1862 Sept 20 - Dismissed from hospital in Warrenton, Virginia
1862 Oct 4 - Arrived home with leg giving him a lot of trouble
1863 Jan 21 - Went to Columbia & caught erysipelas (a severe skin rash accompanied by fever and vomiting, caused by streptococcal bacteria)
1863 Sept 25 - Started back to his regiment
1863 Oct 18 - Wrote resignation letter from duty due to wound from the Battle of Manassas keeping him from performing his duty
1863 Oct 23 - Resignation approved
1863 Nov 2 - Resignation in effect

After the war, Rufus married Isabel Besaner of Lincoln Co., North Carolina. They had several children.

Rufus was a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity, and for thirty years a deacon of the Baptist Church, leading an exemplary Christian life.
