US Navy Rear Admiral. He entered the United States Naval Academy in 1861 and graduated with the Class of 1864. During the summers of 1862 and 1864, while a midshipman, he cruised after the Confederate steamers Tallahassee and Florida. He then went to Greenland on the USS Juanita in 1870 in search of Polaris survivors. That same year, he took Virginius filibusters from Santiago, Cuba, to New York. He served on the USS Kenosha, which escorted the English ship Monarch to Portland, Maine in 1871, carrying the body of philanthropist George Peabody. He commanded the USS Justin off Santiago, during the Spanish-American War, and the USS New Orleans on Manila Station. He served as Captain of Navy Yard, Mare Island, California until 1901 and retired as a Rear Admiral.
