Walter was born January 24, 1909 in Oconto Falls, WI to Fred and Louise (Weisner) Tisch. He married Magdaline Jane Konitzer on September 17, 1938 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church of Oconto Falls. Walter was always called "Cocky" by his friends and family. His brother Norman (Nunsky) married his wife's sister, Dorothy. They lived across the street from one another in Oconto Falls.
Walter and Magdaline had eight children: David, Shirley, Larry, Mary Lou, Dale, Barbara, Ronald and Kenneth.
