FORMER SHEBOYGAN CIVIL WAR VETERAN RETURNS AFTER VISIT
George Benninghaus was born Nov. 10, 1846, in Sheboygan in a house then situated on the site now occupied by Calumet hall and grounds. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Benninghaus. He was reared to young manhood here, and in January 1864, he accepted the call of Abraham Lincoln and went to Fond du Lac with fifteen others of Sheboygan county, enlisting in the Union Army. He was assigned to Company F, Forty-fifth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered into the service in Madison. After leaving the service, he returned to Plymouth, Sheboygan county, hiring out as a farm hand there. On March 27, 1867, Mr. Benninghaus met and married Miss Romancy Van Dorsten, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Van Dorsten, at Plymouth. Two children were born to them {Alvin Otto & Edward J.}. His first wife died after they were married four years, and on April 22, 1876, Mr. Benninghaus married Mrs. Sophia Bishop of Roselawn. To this union were born two daughters and one son.
Mr. Benninghaus enjoys excellent health. He still has a substantial hand grip, carries his age exceptionally well and has a most genial and interesting disposition.

{note: "Green Bay Press-Gazette" Tues. Mar 28, 1939, obituary page 4, has his date of birth as November 10, 1847--which agrees with his headstone.}
