For meritorious conduct and bravery, John was promoted to the rank of Colonel and served his country until 1782. He located in Liberty Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania, in 1784.
Col. McGee died from an accidental drowning when his canoe capsized on 24 June 1804 near Curtins Forge, Centre County, PA.
