PIONEER RESIDENT DIES
Conrad Smith, well-known in this community, passed away last Thursday afternoon after a long illness. Mr Smith has been a resident of Garden county for several years and has gained many close friends who grieve his passing.
Funeral services were held Sunday morning at the Kowanda church, Rev Sortor officiating. The quartette, composed of Mrs Saint, Romona Saint, Mr J W Lancaster and Mr John Jardchow, sang "Asleep in Jesus". They were accompanied by Mrs Elizabeth Paulsen. Mr Jarchow also sang as a solo, "In the Garden". Pall Bearers were six grandsons: Ben Smith, Oliver Smith, Oscar Smith, Edward Charles Smith, Milton Smith and Carl Smith.
Interment was made in the Kowanda cemetyery.
OBITUARY
Conrad William Smith, son of Mr and Mrs George Smith, was born in Hassenland, Germany, January 14th, 1847; and departed this life at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs Alvin Christensen in Garden county, Nebraska, July 16th, 1936 at the age of 89 years, 6 months, and two days.
When Mr Smith was a small boy he came with his parents from Germany and located in the state of Ohio. Due to blindness he was not able to attend school until he was fourteen years of age at which time he regained his sight. He received his education and grew to manhood in Ohio, and on February 6, 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Knapp, of Powellsville, Ohio.
While residing in that state, Mr Smith was engaged in mining and farming. As a youth, he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith and has remained a member of that church throughout his life. Mr and Mrs Smith came to Clatonia, Nebraska in 1893 and resided there until [blank] when they came to Garden county.
Mr Smith was a kind and loving husband, father, and neighbor. He and Mrs Smith enjoyed many happy years of wedded life, she having preceded him in death September 5th, 1928. To this union twelve children were born: namely, Caroline Brown, Ironton, Ohio; Fred and Henry of Oshkosh Nebraska; John of Cortland; Mary Ridgley of Pickerell; Lizzie Doolittle, Amelia; Will, of Haxton, Colorado; Carl of Atkinson; and Viola Doolittle of Firth. Andy, Anna and an infant daughter having passed away several years ago.
Besides the above mentioned children he leaves 55 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren.
During most of the past two years Mr Smith has been bedfast at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs Laura Christensen.
