The original five acres of land for Mountain Park Cemetery was sold in 1891 to the city of Saint Jo by David and Rosa Cunningham for $200 an acre to be used as a city cemetery.
David C Cunningham was born in Missouri and came to Texas in 1852, first to Fannin County and then to Montague County in 1873. He married Clarinda Brooks. They had two children before she died in 1876. After her death David married Rosa Thorn, eleven years his junior. They had eight children. David was a grocer, a farmer, and a brand inspector during the trail drive era. He also served as Montague County Commissioner from 1891 to 1892.
