John Louis Ponder died at 6 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, 1972 in the Newton County Medical Center in Newton after an illness of several months. A son of J. L. Ponder and Mary Elizabeth Allen Ponder, he was born Oct. 10, 1888 in Scott County. He was a retired school teacher, a Baptist and a former resident of Route two, Bentonia. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Bessie Winstead Ponder of Newton; one son, John L. Ponder Jr., of Midland Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Tom Brand of Newton and Mrs. John Covington of Kosciusko; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Miss Clyde Ponder and Miss Claudie Ponder, both of Jackson. Services were held Monday at Stricklan-King Chapel with interment in Melrose Cemetery. Officiating were the Rev. Ed Perrett and the Rev. Hardy Durham. Serving as pallbearers were Clifton Ertle, O. C. Kinnard, W. C. Robertson, Robert Estes, E. L. Morgan and Clarence Vandervere. Honorary pall bearers were J. J. Vandevere, Phillip Thomas, Ernest Foster and the Deacons of Melrose Baptist Church.
