About 1880 Joe and two cousins, Amos Conrad and John Hostetler, migrated from Henry County, Iowa to Oregon, making their way by train to a small Swiss Mennonite settlement in the Silverton hills. Here the Heyerly's, Geiger's, Beugli's, Bierie's, Steiner's and Amstutz's had a small church. Joe Conrad found his wife, Lina Beugli, among this group.
