John A. Rickerson, died recently in Omaha at the age of 85.
Orphaned at age 9, John A. Rickerson and his brothers went to live at the Omaha Home for Boys. As an adult, Rickerson served the home as a trustee, lawyer and adviser, serving on their Board of Directors from 1954 until his death. Rickerson attended high school and college in Omaha, and then served in World War II as a pilot, and was shot down in Europe. He and other Americans in his crew hid for months, helped by the French underground, until they were rescued by American forces. Rickerson married Lela Scheer during an Army furlough in December, 1942. On returning from the war, Rickerson received both his Bachelor of Arts degree and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan. He served in the Korean War serving as Captain and Legal Officer in the United States Air Force from 1951-52 and upon returning to the United States opened a law practice in Omaha, becoming a trial attorney. He is survived by his wife, Lela, daughter, grandchildren, and other family members. A son died earlier.
