A.D.W. Bodley was the son of Levi Bodley and Mary Dewitt. He was a veteran of the War of 1812.
The U.S. Army register of enlistments says that in 1812 A.D.W. was 6'2" tall with black hair, black eyes, and a dark complexion. It gives his birthplace as Marbletown, N.Y., but only 3 weeks later he was baptized at the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church in Wawarsing, so perhaps all we can safely say is that he was born in Ulster County.
In roughly the 1810s, several members of the Bodley, Dewitt, and related families moved west to the Cayuga/Onandaga County, New York area. In Feb 1816 both A.D.W. and future wife Sophia Helm were received as members of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church at Owasco. The marriage register in their daughter Catharine's bible says A.D.W. and Sophia were married 4 Jul 1816.
Many of these Bodley, Dewitt, and related families did not stay near Owasco for long. A.D.W. and others appear in the Richland County, Ohio census for 1820. A.D.W. seems to have remained in the Plymouth, Ohio area for the rest of his life.
