"Benjamin R. DEAN
An Old and Respected Resident Passes Away
Benjamin R. Dean, father of Elmer Dean, of the firm of Sheehan, Dean & Co., died Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. G. Bacorn, No. 407 West Sixth street. A slight attack of paralysis, together with his advanced age was the cause of his death. Mr. Dean was born in Montrose, Pa., and was eighty-two years old. He located in Elmira in 1870 and for twenty years was connected with the Erie shops, retiring on account of advancing years. The deceased is survived by four daughters, Mrs. R. Y. Wilson of Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. E. G. Bacorn, Mrs. L. A. Smith and Ida C., of this city, also three sons. L. M. Dean and Elmer Dean, of this City, and C. B. Dean of New York city, two sisters, Mrs. C. H. Fenton and Mrs. J. C. Shoemaker of Horseheads, and one brother, John C. of Buffalo. The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at his late home, interment being in Woodlawn." (Elmira Sunday Telegram, Page 8, 6 February 1898)

Benjamin R. Dean died this morning at 4 o'clock at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. E. G. Bacorn, No. 407 West Sixth street. The deceased was born in Montrose, Pa., in 1816, being therefore eighty-two years old. He came to Elmira in 1870 and until about eight years ago was connected with the Erie shops in this city. He is survived by a brother, John C. Dean of Buffalo, two sisters, Mrs. John C. Shoemaker and Mrs. C. H. Fanton of Horseheads, four daughters, Mrs. R. Y. Wilcox of Philadelphia; Mrs. E. G. Bacorn, Mrs. L. A. Smith and Miss Ida C. Dean of this city, and three sons, C. B. Dean of New York. L. M. of, of this city and Elmer Dean of the well known firm of Sheehan, Dean and Company. During his residence in this city he has been a quiet, respected citizen and his loss will be greatly mourned by a large circle of friends. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from Mrs. Bacorn's residence, Dr. George H. McKnight officiating. The interment will be in Woodlawn."
