Martha Lavina Brooks was the daughter of William H. Brooks [b. abt 1816 in NC] and his first wife (Unk). She had three siblings; Sarah b.1837 TN, Jane J b. 1839 TN, and Mary b.1843 MO. We only see those three on the 1850 census of Benton, Newton, Missouri. Their mother had passed, perhaps when she had Mary, and William was married to the widow Margaret Starr (Ford)(Brooks). Margaret had brought her four Ford children into the marriage, and they had two more boys of that union.
On August 2, 1860 we find Martha Lavina living with her father William H. Brooks and his third wife Mary Ann Burgett, the two boys from his marriage to Margaret Starr Ford, William and James, and his first child with Mary Ann, Aaron W. Brooks. Martha Lavina now has the surname of Adams. She was 18.
On August 13, 1870 we find Martha Lavina Brooks Adams still living with her father, but she has a 9 year old daughter Mary C. Adams.
On June 23, 1880 we find Martha Lavina in Liberty, Pulaski, Missouri, as head of household. She is listed as widowed, with Mary C. and a new 4 year old daughter, Mattie Jane Adams. Martha states that both girls' father was born in Canada.
Second wife of Preston Biggs. They were married Oct. 23, 1890 by Samuel I. Shelton, Justice of the Peace, Logan County, Arkansas.
