James Hawkins McConnell "Uncle Jim" came to Arkansas with his parents, Hon. and Mrs.R. H. McConnell when he was about ten years and lived here the balance of his natural life. He was a soldier during the civil war and on his return home was married in 1868 to Louise Marrow; they were the parents of five children; two sons and three daughters.
In 1901 "Uncle" Jim put in the first local Phone System in Greenwood and later extended the line to Charleston, Branch, and to Paris. The first local switch board was installed in the McConnell residence and his daughters were the first "Hello" operators. This phone system was an upward adjunct to Greenwood in the City's development. The people were ready for the advent of the new enterprise and the adventure soon developed a lucrative return; all to the credit of Jim's judgement and the energy to back it.
James Hawkins was well known for his genuine smile, a hearty laugh and a soul of good humor. No one enjoyed a good joke better even if he was the victim.
