Samuel Westlake b. 1721 was the son of Samuel Westlake Sr. who died in 1726, Piles Grove, Salem Co. NJ per NJ Colonial Records. (According to latest research Samuel Sr. was born in Newton Abbot, Devon, England in 1692 per parish records they also state his father was named Thomas. Samuel Sr. settled in NJ Colony either prior to or after Samuel Jr's 1721 birth.)His son, Samuel Jr. b. 1721 had a brother named George Westlake born 1725. Their mother was Anne per NJ Colonial Records. After Samuel Sr.'s death,Ann married John Burroughs (Burrows) in Presby. Church, Phila PA. They apparently remained in NJ.

Samuel Westlake Jr. b. 1721 was then raised by John & Anne Westlake Burroughs. He was brought up somewhere near Trenton, NJ. He later married Sarah Welling. Family history, by a granddaughter, mentions the Westlakes lived near the Trenton area and had iron works. Colonial and NJ Tax records show Samuel & family residing and farming in Hardyston, Sussex Co. NJ by the mid 1750's as their son John was brought up near Sussex Court House (per old NY Gazette news). They lived Sussex Co.through end of Rev. War & were on 1780/81 Tax Lists Sussex Co. Samuel and Sarah Westlake had the following children: Samuel III b. c.1745; John b. c.1747; Burroughs b. 1749; George b.?; THOMAS b. 1755; Joseph (Josiah) b. c.1758; William b. 1761; Sarah b. 1763 and d. young; and Nancy b. c. 1764 m. Seely NY.

After the war Samuel Jr. left Sussex Co. NJ and moved with son, Thomas, to Virginia prior to the 1790 census. In 1792 they lived in Rockbridge Co. near Natural Bridge. Staying but a few years they then moved to Greenbrier Co.(Big Levels) near Frankford VA(now WV). Samuel is buried at the old Gilboa Meeting House cemetery and it's believed that Sarah is also. A NEW GRAVE MARKER FOR SAMUEL AND SARAH HAS BEEN PLACED AT THE FRANKFORD METHODIST CHURCH THAT WAS BUILT TO REPLACE GILBOAH(not Baptist as grave marker shows). Samuel's family resettled to many states: OH,PA,MO,KY,etc. His son, Thomas, settled in Gallia Co., OH.

The old marker for Samuel Westlake disappeared long ago. Westlake family descendants have placed a new marker at nearby Methodist Church.
