Civil War Union Army Soldier. Soon after the Civil war started with the Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter, Charleston, South Carolina, he was mustered in as a Private in Company I, 4th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on April 20, 1861. He served a three month enlistment, then was mustered out on July 21, 1861 at expiration of the unit's term.

He enlisted in the 41st Pennsylvania Emergency Troops to meet the threat of the Confederate Invasion of Pennsylvania in June-July 1863, being mustered in as a Sergeant in Company H on July 1. He served until he was discharged on August 3, 1863.

On January 16, 1864 he was mustered in as a Corporal in Company F, 20th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry. He served through the end of the war, served a brief time in Company F, 1st Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, and was honorably mustered out on July 13, 1865.

On November 12, 1894 he filed for a United States Army Pension (Application #1161930, Certificate #997468).

On April 1, 1910 his wife, Amanda E. Bonter, filed for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #939480, Certificate #705737).
