Mr. Darwin L. Bakner, 59, of 1001 W. Park Blvd., Apt. 270, Plano, TX, died around 3:00 PM, Sunday, August 26, 2001. Death was the result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident that also claimed the life of his wife and three step-grandchildren.
Born January 17, 1942 in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of Leonard E. Bakner, Quincy, PA and the late Mrs. Elenora (Kauffman) Bakner who died on Oct. 3, 1990. He lived his early life in Quincy.
Mr. Bakner graduated from Quincy High School with the class of 1960. He graduated from Shippensburg State Teachers College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964. He was also certified by CPCU Insurance in Chicago, IL in 1976.
Mr. Bakner served with the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict in the intelligence division.
He and his wife, the late Mrs. Deborah "Debbie" Annette (Dillard) Williams Bakner, were married on September 2, 2000 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He had lived at the present residence since 1992.
Mr. Bakner was employed by the North Carroll High School near Westminster, MD teaching history from 1964-65. Following his discharge from the Army, he was employed by Insurance Company of North America in Richmond, VA. In 1979, he was employed by Continental Insurance Company of North American in Reading, PA. In 1983 he became Vice President of Georgia Casualty and Surety in Atlanta, GA. In 1984 he moved to Texas and began work as a senior claims specialist with Crum & Forster Insurance Company in Dallas, TX where he was presently employed.
Mr. Bakner was a member of the Shippensburg University Alumni Association, the Greater Dallas, TX Dance Club, the Big D Country & Western Dance Club, the Sierra Club, and various investment groups. He was a charter member of the Property Casualty Underwriters and also served as an assistant Scoutmaster while his son was growing up. His hobbies included backpacking, country western dancing, and traveling.
In addition to his father, he is survived by one son, James D. Bakner, Buena Vista, VA; one daughter, Heather L. Bakner, Austin, TX; one stepdaughter, Leisa Williams, Wills Point, TX; one stepson, Van Williams, Dallas, TX; and a number of aunts and uncles.
In addition to his wife and mother, he was preceded in death by three step-grandchildren who also died in the accident, Brittany Ann Belcher, Aaron Dean Belcher and Misty Michele Belcher.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, September 1, 2001 at the Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, PA, with Rev. James T. Williams officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Quincy, PA.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the funeral home. There will be no public viewing.
