Augustus was the son of Gottlieb Friedrich and Louise (Weland) Sautter who were both born in Wuertemberg, Germany. Gottlieb's family immigrated to the United States in 1837 and Louise's in 1840. Gottlieb and Louise settled in New Jersey to raise their family. After Augustus' birth, the family migrated west to Missouri. They settled on the Missouri River at Glasgow in Howard County. There, Augustus' two youngest siblings were born.

On 31 January 1879, Augustus married 19-year-old Emma F. Brooks, daughter of Tunis Brooks of Chariton County, Missouri. Augustus and Emma were enumerated living on a farm in 1880. It is believed that she died. He married Leona Frances Vance on 6 February 1883 in Keytesville, Chariton County, Missouri. By 1900, they had moved to a farm in Adair County, Missouri. Their known children were Zelmer Mildred Louise, Charles Fredrick, Nannie Mae, Alta Lee, Marvin Isiah, Bertha Viola, Ardena Frances, and Cecile G. Sautter.

Leona died in 1927 and was buried at Bear Creek Cemetery in Adair County. Augustus later went to Hannibal, Missouri to be with his daughter Nannie Mae Dugan where he died in 1937. His remains were returned to Bear Creek Cemetery for burial.
