Obituary:
Edward Francis Novis, 86, of 1911 Belle Vista Drive, a World War II veteran and business owner, died of natural causes Sunday at Peace Hospice.

Visitation is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Schnider Funeral Home, with a vigil service at 6 p.m. at Hillcrest Lawn Memorial Chapel. Funeral Liturgy is noon Thursday at St. Ann's Cathedral, followed by burial with military honors in Highland Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Novis of Great Falls; daughters Diana DeFrenza of Palo Alto, Calif., and Nancy Novis of San Diego; a son, David Novis of Missoula; a sister, Anna Mae Miles of Missoula; and brothers George Novis of Spokane and John Kuchan of Missoula.

Ed is also survived by his son-in-law, Michael DeFrenza; a daughter in law, Bridget Novis; his stepchildren, Laurie (Bruce) Rollinson, Judy O'Dell, Tim (Char) O'Dell and Joseph (Leslie) O'Dell; his grandchildren, Joshua Voeller, Jonathan Voeller, Benjamin Voeller, Anthony DeFrenza, David DeFrenza, Lindsay Novis and Eddy Novis, and his step-grandchildren Geoff L'Heureux, Timothy L'Heureux, Jackie L'Heureux, Molly O'Dell, Jenny O'Dell, Caroline Rollinson, Catherine Pichler Rollinson, Meghan O'Dell and Kathleen O'Dell.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marguerite Belzer Novis; a sister, Marion Dorward; and his parents, George and Anna Novis.

Ed was born April 26, 1918, in Anaconda, to George and Anna (Lascantz) Novis. He attended schools in Anaconda and graduated from Anaconda High School.

After attending high school, he went on to the University of Montana, but was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve his country in World War II. He served in the Pacific theater of operations as a 1st lieutenant with the 81st Division, 323rd Infantry Regiment. He served in the Palau Islands, Southwest Pacific, Southern Philippines and Leyte. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, American Theatre Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal with two Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was wounded in action at Peleliu Island on Nov. 12, 1944.

After returning from the war, he continued his education at the University of Oregon, where he earned his business degree. He worked in business for many years as the owner of Novco, an automotive parts distribution business.

In 1943, he married Marguerite Belzer at St. Ann's Cathedral in Great Falls. She passed away in 1983. In 1987, he married Catherine O'Dell at St. Mary's Mission in Stevensville, Mont.

Ed was the chairman of the C.M. Russell Auction, as well as a volunteer for the Red Cross. He was also a city commissioner and a former president of the Meadow Lark Country Club. Ed was an athlete, had a passion for playing handball and golf, and also excelled at tennis and football in his youth.
