This is foot marker #3 in the lot photograph. Civil War Veteran in the 124th Regiment of the New York Volunteers, nicknamed the "Orange Blossoms" after Orange County. He rose to the rank of Sergeant. He was severely wounded, but survived the War. His letters written while in the service were published as Civil War: Letters Home by The Office of the Orange County Historian [NY], 1987. The letters give an account of his experiences. He spent a lot of time hospitalized due to diarrheal and respiratory illnesses, common problems among Civil War soldiers.
During the Battle of Chancellorsville, he was shot through the mouth when a ball entered just below his left ear, passed through his oral cavity, and exited his right cheek bone. He wrote his father that no teeth were lost nor was his tongue damaged and that there was not much pain. However, since he was categorized in his pension record as "Army Invalid", there must have been at least some permanent facial damage. He spent about 11 days as a Confederate prisoner following the battle. He was discharged from the Army due this injury.
Most of his letters home were signed "Wirt".
William was born in the Town of Wawayanda, Orange County, New York. He married first: Julia W. Pierson on 7 November 1867, officiated by Rev. Nathaniel E. Pierson, Ridgebury Presbyterian Church, witnessed by John W. Slauson and Mrs. Jesse Webb. He married second: Mary Boyd (her first husband was Dwight Berry), 21 November 1908 in Middletown, New York by clergyman, Theron Brittan. Nellie L Mapes and Amelia D Vail acted as witnesses.
From at least November 1908, William lived in Middletown and worked as a mail carrier. He received a military pension that continued to be paid to Mary after his death.
Cemetery records are held by the Town Clerk, Town of Wawayanda, Orange County, NY; however, William's burial record in this lot doesn't survive.
