Laura Jane Johnson was born in a farmhouse in Emanuel County, on Aug 1, 1900. She was the 11th of 12 children born to Eveline Hall and Joseph L Johnson.

On Apr 15, 1916 she married Charles Allen Barbee and they moved to Savannah, Georgia. She and Charlie had 9 children together. They were: Thomas Cecil, Freddie Allen, Vivian Edith, Evelyn Pearl, Mary Elizabeth, Annie Laura, Charles Allen, Jr., Joseph Henry and Virginia Lee Barbee.

The family lived in Savannah on 34th Street for 25 years. Laura always had a multitude of flowers. They also raised chickens and grew their own vegetables on the vacant lot across the street.

Charlie was a city policeman on the beat for several years. Laura made all her childrens clothes and took in sewing to help the family along. Later she became a nurse's aid at Telfair Hospital.

She was a Southern Baptist and member of Calvary Baptist Temple where John Wilder was Pastor. She loved the Lord and she loved her family.

She raised and bred Persian cats, collies, then later Pekingese dogs.
In 1943 she married George Bradshaw.

I have never seen a woman with more determination than her. Once when one of her daughters was given up for dead by her own doctor, my grandmother took her home and nursed her back to health. It took a year, but she would not give up.

She taught me how to sew. She taught me how persistence and patience can pay off.
She was my Grandmother and we called her 'Big Mama'.
