He entered Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD in 1925 and was ordained June,1933.After his ordination he was assigned to Sacred Heart Parish, Winchester, VA. While there as part of his duties he ministered to 4 CCC Camps in the Shenandoah Valley.
In 1934 he was transferred to Sacred Heart Parish in Norfolk, VA. While there he started St. Mary's Infant Home in 1946 for WWII orphans.
In 1947 he was again transferred, this time to St. James Parish, Hopewell, VA. as their pastor. He was responsible for building a new church and rectory during his stay there.
In 1953 he was assigned to St. James Parish in Falls Church, VA as their pastor. He remained there until his retirement in 1977.
In 1961, Pope John XXIII conferred on him the honor of Domestic Prelate with the title of Right Reverend Monsignor.
In 1974 he was appointed by Bishop Thomas J. Walsh as the first Vicar General of the new Diocese of Arlington,(VA.).
