The son of John Adams, in 1860 was a farmer living in Fawn Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 2" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York County November 9, 1862, mustered into federal service November 11 as a private with Co. I, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), promoted to corporal December 21, 1862, and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in York.

He married Sallie Grove, who died May 21, 1868. He then married Sarah Eliza Pegan June 17, 1869, in Martic Township, Lancaster County, fathering Jennie C. G. (b. 04/23/70), M. Margie (b. 02/22/72), and Samuel Jamison (b. 02/06/75). Cause of his death is listed as "senile debility."
